Greek shipping companies have earned at least $3.8 billion over the past three years from transporting Russian crude oil, according to estimates published by the Financial Times on July 7. The newspaper noted that the shipments were carried out under the G7 price cap mechanism, which allows the transportation of Russian oil provided it is sold below the established price ceiling.<\/p>\n
The largest share of the profits went to Dynacom Tankers, founded by Greek billionaire George Prokopiou. According to the report, the company has earned at least $915 million from transporting Russian crude since July 2023 alone.<\/p>\n
Olympic Shipping and Management, part of the Onassis Group, generated at least $404 million, while Athens-based tanker operators Stealth Maritime and Polembros Shipping each earned more than $200 million.<\/p>\n
According to the Financial Times<\/em>, eight of the twenty companies that have generated the highest revenues from transporting Russian oil since June 2023 are Greek.<\/p>\n The active involvement of Greek shipowners in transporting Russian crude has repeatedly sparked tensions between Kyiv and Athens. In 2023, Ukraine designated several Greek companies, including Dynacom, as “international sponsors of war.” They were later removed from the list following objections from the Greek government.<\/p>\n At present, transporting Russian oil remains legal as long as shipments comply with the G7 price cap. However, the United States and the European Union have been discussing tougher sanctions on Russia’s energy sector in recent months.
