Europe\u2019s largest automaker, Volkswagen, is planning to cut up to 100,000 jobs and shut down four manufacturing plants in Germany, marking the most extensive restructuring in the company\u2019s 89-year history, Reuters reports.<\/p>\n
According to the report, the group’s large-scale transformation plan also includes reducing its planned investments by approximately 15%, to around \u20ac130 billion over the next five years.<\/p>\n
Volkswagen\u2019s core passenger car brand, along with its components division, is expected to be separated from the group and transformed into independent companies. The move is intended to make it easier to list these businesses on capital markets in the future.<\/p>\n
In the medium term, Volkswagen plans to end production at its German plants in Hanover, Zwickau, and Emden, as well as at the Audi factory in Neckarsulm, once the current vehicle models are gradually phased out.<\/p>\n
These proposals go beyond the company\u2019s existing plan to eliminate 50,000 jobs and come despite a 2024 agreement with labor unions that ruled out factory closures in Germany during this decade.<\/p>\n
Volkswagen\u2019s Works Council and the influential German trade union IG Metall have warned that they will strongly oppose any such cost-cutting measures.<\/p>\n
In the 2025 financial year, Volkswagen employed 667,164 people worldwide, with nearly 43% of its workforce based in Germany.
