The tanker went “dark” after loading its cargo last month, turning off its tracking transponder, and reappeared off the coast of India on Sunday, June 7.

Bloomberg notes that major Gulf producers, including the United Arab Emirates, are increasingly disabling location transponders on state-controlled tankers in order to export oil and liquefied natural gas through the strait. Although export volumes remain significantly below pre-war levels, Rapidan Energy Group estimates that approximately 2 million barrels of oil and related products are still being shipped out of the Persian Gulf each day.

The UAE began using this tactic last month to maintain LPG supplies to its key customer, India.

Kuwait has also recently offered crude oil sales to Asian refiners for the first time since the outbreak of the war involving Iran, providing further evidence that energy exports continue to leave the Gulf through the Strait of Hormuz despite the ongoing disruption.

With its identification system switched off, Gas Umm Al Rowaisat loaded LPG at Kuwait’s Mina Al Ahmadi refinery on May 28 and reappeared on June 7 near India’s northwestern coast. The cargo was then transferred to the KPC-chartered supertanker Badrinath.

India is a major LPG consumer, using the fuel primarily as household cooking gas, and has traditionally relied heavily on supplies from Gulf producers.
