India is preparing to introduce a new high-ethanol fuel blend to the market as part of its ongoing efforts to diversify energy supplies and reduce dependence on imported oil, Bloomberg reports.<\/p>\n
The new fuel will be officially launched at a fuel station operated by Indian Oil Corporation in New Delhi, after which it will become available at 50 filling stations across the country.<\/p>\n
India currently sells E20 gasoline, which contains 20% ethanol. The new blend, known as E85<\/strong>, will contain approximately 85% ethanol<\/strong> and is expected to be more environmentally friendly than conventional fuels.<\/p>\n The transition to electric vehicles in India has been relatively slow due to high costs and an underdeveloped charging infrastructure. As a result, the government views ethanol-powered transportation as a faster and more affordable alternative for reducing the country\u2019s dependence on oil imports.<\/p>\n Ethanol is produced from agricultural feedstocks, including sugarcane, rice, and corn. Expanding its use in the transportation sector could also benefit farmers by increasing demand for agricultural products.<\/p>\n Over the past five years, gasoline consumption in India has grown by an average of 9% annually<\/strong>, increasing the country’s reliance on imported crude oil.<\/p>\n Earlier, India\u2019s Minister of Petroleum unveiled new vehicle models designed to run on E85 fuel, including motorcycles manufactured by Hero MotoCorp and the Maruti Suzuki Wagon R passenger car.<\/p>\n The government is also exploring additional measures to accelerate the adoption of vehicles powered by ethanol-blended fuels.<\/p>\n At the same time, discussions continue within the industry regarding the impact of high-ethanol blends on fuel efficiency and engine durability. India\u2019s Ministry of Petroleum has previously stated that E20 fuel produces lower emissions and offers better performance characteristics than conventional gasoline.
