The European Commission has imposed a \u20ac200 million fine on Temu after the company failed to identify, analyze, and assess systemic risks associated with illegal products offered on its platform.<\/p>\n
The regulator found that Temu had failed to comply adequately with the requirements of the Digital Services Act (DSA), particularly regarding the assessment of systemic risks related to illegal goods sold on its platform and the potential harm to consumers in the European Union.<\/p>\n
According to the European Commission, the risk assessment conducted by Temu in 2024 did not meet regulatory requirements because it was based on general e-commerce sector data rather than on the platform\u2019s own specific risks.<\/p>\n
The Commission also stated that a significant share of products sold through Temu could pose dangers to consumers in the EU. In particular, inspections found that some chargers failed to meet basic safety requirements, while a high percentage of tested children’s toys presented medium- to high-severity safety risks.<\/p>\n
The regulator further noted that recommendation algorithms and product promotion through influencers may have amplified the distribution of potentially dangerous products.<\/p>\n
Temu has been ordered to submit a remediation plan by August 28. The plan will then be assessed by the European Board for Digital Services, after which the European Commission will make a final decision regarding the timeline for its implementation.<\/p>\n
Failure to comply with the requirements could result in additional financial penalties.<\/p>\n
