SpaceX has invested more than $15 billion in the development of the Starship rocket, Reuters reports. This amount significantly exceeds the cost of developing the Falcon 9, which totaled about $400 million and became the foundation of SpaceX\u2019s commercial success.<\/p>\n
Starship is a key element of Elon Musk\u2019s strategy\u2014the rocket is expected to enable mass launches of Starlink satellites and serve as the foundation for future missions to the Moon and Mars. In addition, the company is considering using orbital satellites for artificial intelligence computing.<\/p>\n
New-generation Starlink V3 satellites are planned to be launched in the second half of 2026, with Starship expected to carry them into orbit. Thanks to its larger payload bay, the rocket will be able to deliver up to 60 satellites per launch\u2014significantly more than Falcon 9.<\/p>\n
Among the main challenges is building infrastructure for frequent launches. A single launch requires enormous resources: hundreds of fuel trucks and about one million gallons of water to suppress acoustic loads. Orbital refueling also remains an unresolved issue\u2014a technology necessary for long-distance missions.<\/p>\n
Development is being carried out at the Starbase facility in Texas, where SpaceX is trying to establish rocket production following an aviation-style model\u2014fast and at scale. However, numerous design changes after test flights complicate this process.<\/p>\n
