He made the statement during a live broadcast on his social media platform X.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"416\" data-end=\"541\">The project will be called Terafab and will be a joint venture involving Musk\u2019s other companies \u2014 Tesla, SpaceX, and xAI.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"543\" data-end=\"742\">According to Musk, the Terafab project is planned for Austin, Texas, and represents the next step toward expanding the use of solar energy and building what he described as a \u201cgalactic civilization.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"885\">Musk noted that current chip manufacturing capacity from existing suppliers will not be sufficient to meet the future needs of his companies.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"744\" data-end=\"885\">\u201cWe will either build Terafab, or we won\u2019t have chips,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd we need chips, so we will build Terafab.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1002\" data-end=\"1214\">The facility is expected to produce two types of chips: those designed for applications such as the Full Self-Driving system and Optimus robots, as well as more powerful chips intended for space-related projects.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1216\" data-end=\"1406\">The total cost of the project is estimated to reach at least $20 billion.
