Oil markets are global, so the response to major disruptions must also be global,\u201d said <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Fatih Birol<\/span><\/span>, Executive Director of the IEA.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"681\" data-end=\"1157\">The 32 member countries of the IEA will release 400 million barrels onto the market. In total, they hold about 1.2 billion barrels in government reserves. Governments may also access up to 600 million barrels from the inventories of commercial companies with which they have agreements. This will be the sixth such operation since the agency was created in 1974. The previous largest release was 182 million barrels in 2022 following <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Russian invasion of Ukraine<\/span><\/span>.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1159\" data-end=\"1527\">Through the <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Strait of Hormuz<\/span><\/span>, which is now effectively closed due to threats from <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Iran<\/span><\/span>, an average of 20 million barrels of oil and petroleum products per day were shipped in 2025. This represented about 25% of global seaborne oil trade. Currently, shipments have fallen to less than 10% of pre-war levels.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1529\" data-end=\"2017\">Meanwhile, <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Sanae Takaichi<\/span><\/span>, Prime Minister of <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Japan<\/span><\/span>, said even before the final IEA decision that her country would begin distributing oil from its reserves on March 16. Japan holds one of the world\u2019s largest reserves. According to Takaichi, the government will draw from private-sector stocks an amount equivalent to 15 days of Japan\u2019s consumption, while state reserves will supply the equivalent of one month of consumption.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"2019\" data-end=\"2214\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">Oil prices have meanwhile risen by more than 4%, with <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">Brent crude<\/span><\/span> reaching $91.9 per barrel and <span class=\"hover:entity-accent entity-underline inline cursor-pointer align-baseline\"><span class=\"whitespace-normal\">West Texas Intermediate<\/span><\/span> rising to $87.3 per barrel.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"featured_media":151280,"menu_order":0,"template":"","newscat":[9],"newstag":[],"issues":[],"class_list":["post-151279","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","newscat-novosti"],"_links":{"self":[{"href":"https:\/\/ldaily.ua\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news\/151279","targetHints":{"allow":["GET"]}}],"collection":[{"href":"https:\/\/ldaily.ua\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/news"}],"about":[{"href":"https:\/\/ldaily.ua\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/types\/news"}],"wp:featuredmedia":[{"embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ldaily.ua\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media\/151280"}],"wp:attachment":[{"href":"https:\/\/ldaily.ua\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/media?parent=151279"}],"wp:term":[{"taxonomy":"newscat","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ldaily.ua\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/newscat?post=151279"},{"taxonomy":"newstag","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ldaily.ua\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/newstag?post=151279"},{"taxonomy":"issues","embeddable":true,"href":"https:\/\/ldaily.ua\/en\/wp-json\/wp\/v2\/issues?post=151279"}],"curies":[{"name":"wp","href":"https:\/\/api.w.org\/{rel}","templated":true}]}}
