According to Carscoops, German Chancellor Friedrich Merz has sent a letter to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen urging the EU to allow European car manufacturers to continue selling new ICE models even after 2035.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"468\" data-end=\"714\">According to Apostolos Tzitzikostas, the EU Commissioner for Sustainable Transport and Tourism, the letter was \u201cvery well received in Brussels.\u201d He emphasized that the EU must protect its own manufacturers and maintain industrial competitiveness.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"716\" data-end=\"1076\">In an interview with Handelsblatt, Tzitzikostas confirmed that the adoption of updated environmental regulations, initially planned for December 10, has been postponed for several weeks \u2014 the European Commission is still finalizing the regulatory package. It will include \u201ceverything \u2014 from revised carbon targets to fleet standards and many other points.\u201d<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1078\" data-end=\"1262\">He noted that the document will take into account current technological trends, including the potential of \u201czero- and low-emission fuels\u201d such as synthetic fuels and advanced biofuels.<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1264\" data-end=\"1523\">Although he did not directly confirm that ICE vehicles running on such fuels will be allowed after 2035, the trend suggests this is becoming increasingly likely. Still, he stressed that the EU\u2019s ambitions remain unchanged, but they must be adapted to reality:<\/p>\n<p data-start=\"1525\" data-end=\"1724\" data-is-last-node=\"\" data-is-only-node=\"\">\u201cWe want to stick to our goals, but we must consider geopolitical changes.
