The decision could cost the U.S. tech giant around $2 billion.

The court found that between October 2015 and December 2020, Apple effectively eliminated competition in the mobile app distribution market and imposed unfair and excessive fees on developers. The lawsuit was filed on behalf of millions of iPhone and iPad users by Dr. Rachel Kent, a British academic who accused Apple of creating an artificial monopoly.

Kent’s legal team argued that Apple maintained a “100% monopoly” over the app market by forcing developers to accept a 30% commission, whereas a fair rate would have been around 17.5%. The tribunal concluded that half of the overcharges were ultimately passed on to consumers.

Apple said it would appeal the decision, calling it a “misinterpretation of a thriving and competitive App Store ecosystem.” A company spokesperson emphasized that the App Store helps developers succeed and provides users with a safe and trusted way to find and purchase apps.

Preliminary estimates put damages at £1.5 billion (about $2 billion).
