In January–July 2025, transit shipments rose 38% year-on-year to 6.7 million tons — the highest level since 2017. For comparison, in the whole of 2024, transit amounted to about 9 million tons.

Kazakh exports via Russia’s Northwest ports in the first seven months of 2025 increased 19% year-on-year to 4.1 million tons, thanks to higher transshipment through the ports of Ust-Luga, St. Petersburg, and Vyborg.

Meanwhile, deliveries through the Taman port almost doubled year-on-year to 2.3 million tons. Another 300,000 tons of coal were shipped by rail to Latvia’s Ventspils port.

The sharp increase in Kazakh transit comes against the backdrop of declining Russian coal shipments through ports in both the Northwest and the South.

Export prices for Russian thermal coal at the end of June 2025 hit their lowest levels since late 2020–early 2021, according to the Center for Pricing Indices (CPI). Coal with a calorific value of 6,000 kcal/kg loaded at Taman port dropped 22% since the start of the year to $63 per ton, while prices at Baltic Sea ports fell 26% to $55 per ton. Falling export prices have reduced the profitability of Russian supplies.

By contrast, Kazakh exporters continue to maintain positive margins on shipments through both Baltic ports and Taman.

Transit growth is also supported by the fact that Kazakhstan is excluded from EU sanctions, which ban transactions with Russian ports.

Experts believe that from August to December, Kazakhstan’s coal transit will continue to grow and is likely to exceed 10 million tons for the full year.

[9
["post-150153","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","newscat-novosti
["GET
