Less than a month before new European Union rules for developers of general-purpose artificial intelligence models come into effect, Meta has refused to sign a voluntary code of practice designed to help comply with the regulations, TechCrunch reports.<\/p>\n
\u2018Europe is going the wrong way on artificial intelligence,\u2019 Meta’s global chief executive Joel Kaplan said in a post on LinkedIn. “We have thoroughly analysed the European Commission’s Code of Practice on General Purpose Artificial Intelligence (GPAI) Models and Meta will not be signing it. This Code creates a number of legal uncertainties for model developers and also includes measures that go far beyond the Artificial Intelligence Act.”<\/p>\n
The Code of Practice, published by the European Commission this month, is designed to help companies implement the necessary processes to comply with the law. In particular, it provides for regular updates of AI service documentation, prohibits the use of pirated content to train models, and obliges companies to comply with the requirements of rights holders regarding the use of their data.<\/p>\n
Kaplan believes that the EU’s approach is excessive and could slow down the development of advanced AI models in Europe and harm European businesses seeking to create products based on these technologies.<\/p>\n
