This option is being considered as part of the preparation of the 18th package of sanctions. This was reported by the Bloomberg news agency, citing informed sources.

The proposal provides for the establishment of a floating ceiling, which will be 15% lower than the market price and will be reviewed every three months. But the first step on this path should be to lower the ceiling from the current $60 to $50 per barrel.

The idea of lowering the price cap on Russian oil has so far been opposed by Greece, Malta and Cyprus, whose economies are heavily dependent on maritime transport services, but they are ‘open’ to the new proposal.

The price cap on Russian oil has been repeatedly criticised in the past for being ineffective in practice. However, on the basis of this rule, Europe has introduced additional sanctions against Russian oil export infrastructure.

According to insiders, the new floating price cap on Russian oil has not yet been finalised. However, it is being considered as part of the 18th package of EU sanctions, which is currently being blocked by Slovakia. Robert Fico’s government is demanding that Russian gas be returned to them or that its loss be compensated.

The future level of the price cap on Russian oil will largely depend on the position of the United States. Donald Trump has so far shown no desire to limit Russia’s ability to finance its war of aggression in Ukraine.

[9
["post-149849","news","type-news","status-publish","has-post-thumbnail","hentry","newscat-novosti
["GET
