Apple Inc, according to a lawsuit filed by Epic Games Inc., must allow mobile app developers to redirect users to alternative resources to pay for services in the App Store. The Wall Street Journal reported this.<\/p>\n
A 30% commission is now charged on each purchase.<\/p>\n
Judge Yvonne Gonzalez Rogers concluded that Apple’s practice was uncompetitive and harmed users by depriving them of the opportunity to pay a lower price for services, and banned Apple from doing so. However, the court did not call Apple a monopolist.<\/p>\n
Epic Games has accused Apple of illegally using its monopoly position and restricting competition. It tried to force Apple to cancel the commission through the courts.<\/p>\n
The judge, however, did not do so, although she stated that Apple did not fully justify the introduction of such a commission on the purchase.<\/p>\n
“The claim that the commission is a fee for developers for using the Apple platform, its intellectual property, as well as for access to the company’s customer base, justifies the commission itself, but not its size,” the judge said.<\/p>\n
Apple called the court’s decision a “justification.” “The court confirmed what we knew all this time: the work of the App Store is not contrary to antitrust law. As the court found – success is not illegal,” – said in a press release from Apple.<\/p>\n
However, the court ruling will limit Apple’s important source of revenue, analysts say.
