It may take Nvidia twice as long to get approval for its deal to buy Britain’s largest technology company, Arm Holdings, which is owned by Japanese financial conglomerate SoftBank Group.<\/p>\n
After the companies announced a $ 40 billion deal last September, the first hurdle was a class action lawsuit from Google, Qualcomm and Microsoft, which filed applications to ban the deal with the US antitrust authorities.<\/p>\n
The US Federal Trade Commission is reportedly currently investigating the takeover deal.<\/p>\n
Already this year, the British authorities began their own investigation into the consequences of the agreement, pointing to the risks of national security.<\/p>\n
Now the threat of disrupting the deal comes from the Chinese antitrust authorities, whose approval is also required, as Arm has a joint venture called “Arm China” with the Chinese private investment company Hopu Investments. ARM Holdings is a holding company for a number of subsidiaries.<\/p>\n
Nvidia has applied for approval of the deal to Chinese antitrust authorities, whose representatives said they might need up to 18 months of thorough investigation to reach a conclusion, the Financial Times reported on Tuesday, citing anonymous sources.<\/p>\n
If the investigation by the Chinese authorities takes so long, the deal could be delayed by more than 2.5 years, as Nvidia initially expected to be able to obtain all necessary permits and complete the operation within a total period of 18 months.<\/p>\n
