On Monday, December 7, Uber and startup Aurora Technologies announced an agreement under which Aurora will take over Uber’s Advanced Technologies Group, which has been developing self-governing cars. Under the terms of the agreement, Uber will receive $ 400 million, 26% of Aurora shares, and the general director of the taxi service, Dara Khosrowshahi, will receive a seat on the board of directors of Aurora.<\/p>\n
The deal actually means that Uber has given up its efforts to develop its own self-governing car. Although initially the company significantly overtook its main competitors Google and Tesla in the development of such technologies, it faced serious problems. It was the Uber car that killed a pedestrian in Arizona, after which the company suspended its test program for such cars. In addition, Uber investors have become increasingly demanding that the company focus its efforts on making its core business, a taxi service, profitable.<\/p>\n
Aurora Technologies was established in 2017 and is supported by Amazon and Sequoia. After another round of financing last July, the company was valued at $ 2.5 billion.
