Gazprom can circumvent European restrictions on the Nord Stream-2 gas pipeline through a contract for gas supplies to the German market, which it has concluded with the Austrian company OMV.<\/p>\n
As we know, the EU gas directive requires half of the capacity of gas pipelines to be provided to independent suppliers. Except for routes for which deliveries began by May 2019.<\/p>\n
The publication notes that Gazprom does not abandon attempts to remove the pipeline from the regulation, but at the same time it made contact with OMV in October this year. The agreement has nothing to do with the current supply contract with Austria.<\/p>\n
According to media reports, the contract is for 15 years with a volume of supplies of six billion cubic meters per year.<\/p>\n
It is still unknown where the Austrian company will buy gas. Experts believe that if procurement begins in Russia, OMV will be the same independent supplier that can use the capacity of Nord Stream-2.<\/p>\n
And if the same agreements are concluded by other creditors of the pipeline, i.e. Wintershall, Uniper, Shell and Engie, then together they will be able to choose the volumes blocked for Gazprom.<\/p>\n
It is also noted that Russian legislation will have to be changed for supplies, as Gazprom currently has a monopoly on the export of Russian pipeline gas.
