German automaker Daimler AG and its US subsidiary Mercedes-Benz have agreed to pay $ 1.5 billion to the US government and California regulators as part of a friendly settlement of a dispute over the manipulation of data on the content of a harmful substances in the exhaust gases of the company’s diesel engines. This stated in the documents submitted to the court on Monday, September 14.<\/p>\n
The U.S. Department of Justice, the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) and the California Attorney General’s Office accuse Daimler AG of violating of the environmental laws, which involves the use of special software to circumvent emissions testing, and the sell about 250 thousand cars with diesel engines that did not comply with federal laws and regulations of the state.<\/p>\n
The amicable agreement also provides that the concern will have to carry out maintenance of these vehicles in order to eliminate the defect. In addition, the company will pay $ 700 million to cover consumer`s claims.<\/p>\n
In September last year, Daimler was fined in Germany for 870 million euros. According to the decision of the Stuttgart Prosecutor’s Office, the management of the automaker showed negligence, which led to the fact that since 2008 diesel cars have been put into operation, although the content of nitrogen oxides in their exhaust in some cases exceeded the norm.<\/p>\n
