Two scientists from Lviv won the competition of projects of the National Research Fund of Ukraine. They will be provided with funds for developing a vaccine against the corona virus COVID-19, as well as to create a new generation of antibiotics.<\/p>\n
This was announced on Wednesday, September 9, by the head of the Lviv Regional State Administration Maksym Kozytskyi, on his Facebook page.<\/p>\n
“I just talked to the director of the Institute of Cell Biology of the National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, Professor Andriy Sibirny and his deputy, Doctor of Biological Sciences Dmytruk Kostiantyn. The researchers have submitted designs for the competition of the National Research Fund of Ukraine. And yesterday learned about the victory, “- wrote Kozytskyi.<\/p>\n
According to him, Dr. Dmytruk will receive 5.1 million hryvnias for the development of a new antibiotic. At the first symptoms of a coronavirus infection, doctors prescribe 2-3 types of antibacterial drugs to stop secondary concomitant bacterial infections, because they often cause deaths.<\/p>\n
However, large-scale and irrational use of antibacterial drugs leads to the spread of infectious agents resistant to antibiotics. The problem of resistance of microorganisms to such drugs is becoming global.<\/p>\n
“The antibiotic developed by Dr. Kostiantyn can save many lives,” said the head of the region.<\/p>\n
For Professor Sibirny from Lviv will be allocated 10 million UAH for the development of the corona virus vaccine.<\/p>\n
“I hope to get yeast producers of viral proteins with my colleagues withing six months. Later it will be tested on animals,\u201d -said Kozitskii.<\/p>\n
The head of the Lviv region noted that “there are many nuances” on the way to the vaccine. For example, Ukrainian law prohibits the import of transgenic animals from abroad, and only those can be tested for the vaccine. Therefore, apparently, scientists will perform this part of the work in collaboration with European colleagues.<\/p>\n
“But most importantly, that the process has begun. For the first time in 29 years, Ukrainian scientists have won world-class grants in Ukraine.
