Microsoft has accused a group of hackers from China of attacking its mail server software.
According to the company, the hackers “with a high degree of probability” were members of the Hafnium group. This group is probably funded by the state and operates outside China.
In particular, the hacking campaign used four previously undiscovered vulnerabilities in different versions of Microsoft software. These security flaws have allowed hackers to rob mailboxes remotely.
Microsoft added that Hafnium aims to attack infectious disease researchers, law firms, universities, and defense contractors. Hackers also harassed political think tanks and non-governmental groups.
